I finished season 3 a few days ago and I think I am still processing it. What a wacky ending (I suppose I wouldn't have it any other way).

I read something about how it was conceived and shot as one long movie, and then edited into hour long episodes. And thinking of it that way it does feel like a movie where the runtime is 80% deleted scenes. Many of the plot threads (if you can even call them that), while entertaining, turn out to be completely or mostly irrelevant. I realize if I wasn't familiar with them from the original show I wouldn't give a shit about half of these characters because they hardly do anything. (This is a problem for some of the new characters, who I don't have a reason to care about. Other new characters who are relevant, like Tammy or the eleventh hour Bri'ish guy, are interesting.)

I sound very down on this show right now even though I had a blast watching it. In fact I feel oddly compelled to watch it again. Maybe not for a while.

Now. There was a second show made by David Lynch and Mark Frost. Called "On The Air". Which they made 7 episodes of, only 3 of which aired in the US.

I...have now watched those 3 episodes. (And will be watching the rest, actually, I just got tired.) It feels orthogonal to "good" or "bad" television; it's sort of bad-on-purpose. Every episode plays out like a train wreck, but it's less cringe-comedy and more slapstick. And surreal; as overused as that word is when discussing Lynch's work, the telephone shooting flames is, well.

This show is really nothing at all like Twin Peaks, except that – you know how Twin Peaks is clearly fascinated with the medium of television? This is that fascination, amplified. They did get some of the same actors – it is fun to see Albert Rosenfield chewing out Dick Tremayne:

You'll notice the subtitle "wakatta yo"; this is because the copy I am watching appears to have been ripped from a Japanese VHS release. Tremendous stuff.

Having just finished the seventh episode of On The Air I am kind of sad to see it go. It is the shitpost of surrealist filmmaking. It's astonishing that any of it was broadcast at all. There's something new and unexpected in every scene. I honestly recommend it

watched Eraserhead. I am nudging my date in the theater when Eraserhead appears on the screen and whispering, "That's Eraserhead." We watch movies to see something we've never seen before. This movie, Eraserhead (1977), is about how being a single father is tough. The way Harry Eraserhead's eraserhead hair lights up when illuminated is inspired. Did you know David Lynch wanted to be a painter before he was a filmmaker? I actually had no idea the song "In Heaven" was from this movie and was so struck when the woman started singing that tune Julian Lage plays.

a few days ago watched DUNE... the nineteen 80s one... I have never read dune nor seen the new movies.

something very curious about this film: it lost millions at the box office and had terrible reviews. siskel and ebert said it had an incomprehensible plot. to which I say: like come on it's not THAT bad? it's actually kinda good??

now... I did, rather by accident, watch a 3-hour cut of this movie (an "Alan Smithee" cut – Lynch disavowed anything other than the original). Possibly the additional ~hour of footage is what makes this movie watchable, I don't know! (Though the accusation of being hard to follow seems strange even if a lot of it was cut. This is very simple Hero's Journey stuff)

Definitely there is criticism to be made of the script. The final act feels heavily abbreviated even in the long version. (this kind of comes with the territory when trying to adapt a Long Ass Novel into 1 film I think.) On the micro level there are a lot of lines which simply don't need to be there. So many times Paul will think something, in voiceover, which was clearly stated 5 minutes ago. (Again it seems impossible not to follow)

And the special effects...well, whenever chroma keying is used it looks kinda dogshit. Spaceships kinda just hang there in space which I reckon is more realistic but it doesn't look nearly as spectacular as Star Wars. (If you're releasing a space opera movie in 1984 you're gonna get compared to Star Wars unfortunately) But the sets look incredible! Very pretty movie overall. And the sand worms look great.

Cast: What a delight to see Kyle MacLachlan! Plus Patrick Stewart, Everett McGill, Max von Sydow, Jack Nance, José Ferrer (Miguel's dad). all Guys I Love To See.

Sound: more orchestral music should have electric guitars in it. Frankly could have used more. There's a theme that's used throughout which starts exactly the same as the theme from movement 4 of Dvořák's New World Symphony. It got me every time

exactly the same as the theme from movement 4 of Dvořák's New World Symphony. It got me every time

Oh yeah the shields are so goofy looking! I also thought of Minecraft. In general you kind of have to pretend your brain really hard for Paul's alleged Elite Fighting Skills to be convincing

watched blue velvet last night. followed it up by rewatching some of the "dracula flow" series. so for now my only thought is if frank were to occasionally say "this shit ain't nothin' to me, man" it wouldn't feel out of place
