Today I would like to talk about Moby – Play.
I gotta tell you I thought they made a stage production of Moby Dick for a sec, forgot where I was.

To day I'd like to talk about Seal IV (2003). This is the first Seal CD I collected – I now have his first four albums. I think it's just fantastic. There is a certain "Windows XP commercial" sound to a lot of the synths and chord progressions which I don't mind. There is also a lot of different styles and some sick as fuck grooves on here so it is not at all monotonous to listen to.

The digipak I have is slightly squished; it was that way in the thrift store. The cover has a raised texture on the word "SEAL" as well as his facial features (including the scars). There are pretty good liner notes but no lyric booklet.

I am in CD limbo right now. The CD player I was using, a Sony CMT-BX1, began dropping out & repeating itself during playback, as if it was having trouble reading the disc. Normally I would blame that on a scratched disc but I tried it with multiple known good ones and it did the same thing, usually around the end of track 1 or 2... So, a problem with the laser. I tried one of those CD cleaner discs & no improvement was made so I imagine it's just failing.

From my parents I acquired a Panasonic SA-PM27 5-disc changer which they had used for many years and then put in storage. This worked for a few days until it stopped making any mechanical noises at all – it seems the changer mechanism is shot, which I understand is a common failure mode of those things. There is a copy of Latin Playboys' "Dose" stuck inside it (straight up, it won't even eject). I may have to disassemble it.

Anyway neither of these systems were particularly ideal, I was using the headphone output on both because I wanted to hook them up to my powered speakers rather than use their own and that's the only other output they have besides the speaker terminals. So I have been looking around for something else.

Now the New CD Player Market seems to be royally fucked. The players that get a lot of buzz and excitement are made by Chinese hi-fi manufacturers like Fiio. They look really slick and have all kinds of claims about DAC quality which I'm sure are true. Unfortunately, according to people who have actually used them, they are incompetent at actually playing CDs. If you have a CD that is supposed to have seamless transitions between tracks (many live albums, classical music recordings, club mix type things, Dark Side of the Moon, etc.) there will be gaps and sometimes the ends of the audio will be cut off. (This is not just a problem with the Fiio but with many new CD players.) The working hypothesis that's out there seems to be that they are using a CD-ROM mechanism because those are easier to get these days, ripping the disc to internal memory, and then playing them back that way (badly). Rather than the correct Red Book standard method of playback. (whatever that is – I'm no expert here)

The CD players that audiophiles (you quickly find yourself on audiophile forums searching for this stuff) tend to recommend are usually upwards of $600 – either that or to get an older used one, something I'm not particularly keen to do having just had two fail. (Besides the bewildering array of old Sony models alone makes my head spin.) Another intriguing suggestion is DVD players. They have remote controls and RCA outs (desirable features for me) and seem to be generally capable of playing CDs with no video output hooked up. Assuming new ones don't have the same bizarre playback problems, it might be the way to go. Sony still sells a DVD player (with the CD logo on it, something I hear is important) for $45.

I have a new audio setup now. First, a big upgrade: Black Lion Audio LS-4 stereo switchbox. A little more than I wanted to spend on such a thing but it is a piece of pro studio gear and I got one used discounted. It is supposed to be 1 in, 4 out, but since it is totally passive you can as easily run it 4 in, 1 out (though the manufacturer warns to only leave one channel active at a time to avoid frying your amp!). Anyway this makes it way easier to plug multiple things (right now just PC and CD player, but I have room for 2 more components) into the same set of powered speakers.

As for CD player... I got ahold of a Sony DVP-SR510H. This is a DVD player, so there are some drawbacks: no shuffle or program play that I can tell. And I don't think there is a way to switch folders on an mp3 CD. But I am not so interested in that stuff anyway: mostly I just want to listen to an album, all the way through. Biggest drawback here is this model does not have a display so I can't see elapsed time or track number (or play/pause status...) In fact the only indication it is even on is a tiny green LED. But it has the essentials: line outs, remote control, (gapless playback). I am also considering that, since it has HDMI output, I could perhaps plug it into my computer monitor and actually use it as a DVD player. Not something I do often but it would be nice to not have to deal with VLC.

Anyway right now it's playing Abundance by the Nth Power. Got it from their merch table when they opened for Snarky Puppy. I am a real sucker for this style of songwriting and vocals. "Only You" is a real favorite.

This is not actually true: if you hook it up to a display you get these options via menus. (If I could memorize the button presses I could probably turn on shuffle without a display.) But I am seriously considering an HDMI switchbox now, although the market for those seems much more jank than for audio
