I think [half-whispered] "Lucy, we need to talk. It's about my sperms" has the potential to be the worst vocal stim of all time

I have finished season 2 and am once again astonished. That was just How It Ended for years and years. So many plot threads reaching a fever pitch and then – the fate of about half the characters left uncertain. I could almost compare it to a shaggy dog story. Again – astonishing.

I did a few days ago watch Fire Walk With Me. I think in some ways it is an unnecessary film – we of course already know all about the last days of Laura Palmer. Mark Frost apparently wanted to make a sequel film. But, having made the choice to make a prequel, it couldn't really be anything other than what it is. Which is to say much more painful and horrific than the main series.

I appreciate a lot of the cinematic choices made. I think the sound design is a high point. There is a scene in a sex club where the music played by the band is oppressively loud. You can see characters yelling in each other's ears to talk but can't really hear what they're saying. It really puts you in the scene, as unpleasant as that is.

The beginning of the movie is also a fun sort of joke with a bizarro universe Twin Peaks where the cops are obstructionist, the coffee is bad, and everyone looks like the ghost of a hobo. Depicting, perhaps more realistically, the poorer side of small town America.

Leland Palmer is also portrayed in a rather different light. It's very effective here but I don't know if I can reconcile it with how he's written in the show.

I wonder what it would be like to watch this film without context. I think much of it would be incomprehensible. But perhaps also it wouldn't have as much of a sense of inevitability.

Anyway I found a copy of "The Missing Pieces" which is about 90 minutes of footage that was cut. Apparently it is mostly scenes with other characters that are more tonally in line with the show. Cutting all that was probably the right decision as it is a fairly tight and focused film, but I do want to see it!

Also – I didn't realize until seeing the credits to this film that Gordon Cole is played by David Lynch.

yes! i do love that scene. it is not a bad movie in any cinematic sense but I found the level of lady torture to just be over the line. it felt like torture porn in a way that lynch's stuff often approaches but does not cross into.

Oh for sure I felt that too. Part of why I said it is sort of an unnecessary film. The gruesome details as already described are horrible enough without actually depicting them. But I gather opinions are really split on this!

Earlier I was thinking about the song "Tom Dooley". And how the murdered woman in the song is named Laurie Foster. And I thought, hey wait, that's the same as in Twin Peaks. Of course now I remember it's Laura Palmer. But wouldn't it be interesting if it were true.

I tracked down a copy of "The Missing Pieces" which is deleted scenes from "Fire Walk With Me". It's around 90 minutes but doesn't really watch like a movie – of course there's no expectation for it to. (Though it's presented in chronological order so if you've recently seen Fire Walk With Me it's easy to follow along.)

Most of this I totally get why it was cut, it would be redundant or unnecessary and slow down the pacing of the film. Still there's a lot of good scenes even if they didn't really need to be included. Something I had thought was odd was that they got David Bowie and then only used him in, like, one scene. Turns out they cut about 80% of his screen time.

Also a surprise was that there was apparently going to be some elaboration on the ending of the show. What was filmed is not much but it is interesting.

I have been watching Twin Peaks The Return and I gotta say, I think it's good. It certainly hits the "goddammit where the hell are they going with this" feeling.

So a few things I don't like: occasionally some lines have felt overwritten, in a "show AND tell" sort of way! Of course just as often there are scenes where people stare at each other for what feels like far too long. (In general it is very self-indulgent filmmaking which I'm not necessarily against)

There is a decent amount of heavy splatter-type gore which is surprising to me, and seems a little tasteless – though sometimes it feels like it is maybe parodying horror movies.

There's one scene which kind of made me mad. Its only real function is to say, "hey, remember Denise? she's still in the show". In it Denise (a trans woman played by a cis man) tells Gordon Cole (a character played by David Lynch) how grateful she is that he stood up for her against transphobic members of the FBI back when she first transitioned. Which really feels like Lynch patting himself on the back for doing a good job! Even though the job he did was, uh...well, the 90s produced worse

Anyway the stuff I like: Kyle MacLachlan gets to show off his acting range. They got back a lot of the original cast and while it shouldn't be that surprising it made me very happy to see a gray haired man perfectly nail the mannerisms and facial expressions of Bobby Briggs. I feel like in many ways the "character actor" is a bit of a lost art but even the new cast is still full of weird, unsettling looking guys.

I appreciate how low-budget a lot of the special effects are. There's a lot of goofy CGI, and I swear there was a car driving scene with back-projected footage in the rear window like a movie from the 50s. Blue-graded day-for-night scenes in a couple places. But then they'll do practical effects like flipping or blowing up a car!

The weird: how anyone could spend 2 minutes interacting with "Dougie Jones" without taking him to a hospital. How there are still corded telephones everywhere in 2017. How iPhones and iMacs have the Apple logo on them clearly but shots of Windows computers are either recreations of the interface or somehow have the start menu button removed. Wally Brando.
