I have a lot of CDs so maybe I will talk about some of them here. :nod:

Today's CD is Coaltar of the Deepers – Revenge of the Visitors (2021). I acquired it along with a bunch of other cheap discs when I bought some OK Glass albums from Needlejuice and wanted to pad out the order. However Needlejuice seems to just be the US distributor – the digipak itself says it's from U-desper Records in Japan & pleasingly came with an obi strip.

Musically this record is all over the place – it starts with what sounds like Concierto de Aranjuez after Miles Davis, there is metal, more typical J-rock, & shoegaze type stuff. It all fits together well and is the most interesting and beautiful album from that batch of unknowns.

The lore behind this album is apparently that their first album from 1994 was The Visitors from Deepspace – and this is a rerecorded version, hence Revenge. I still have not checked out any of their other work.

Today's CD: Big Thief – Double Infinity. Unusually I bought this disc from Bandcamp on release day. I still have not managed to catch them live. I would love to. They are the rare band that got better and less pop oriented as they saw commercial success.

The way this disc is packaged is troublesome to me. It is a simple digisleeve with the CD and lyric booklet stuffed inside together. The spine has the title and artist printed on it, but the front and back are just the album cover – a lime surrounded by strips of lime peel suspended in a black void. While this looks quite stylish taken as a whole, I typically like to prop the back cover of CD cases up near my CD player so I can read the track titles while I'm listening. The lyric booklet also has the lime artwork front and back, and inside the text is printed in alternating columns of dark green and dark blue on black – the blue in particular is almost impossible to read sometimes.

"Los Angeles" is a standout track. It stirs my soul.

Today let's look at Sigur Rós – Hvarf/Heim (2007). I bought this handsome 2-CD package at a Goodwill store for the usual flat rate of $1. One wonders why it needed to be 2 CDs – both Hvarf and Heim are around 36 minutes long, so they totally would have fit on one disc together. (Indeed it seems some reissues have it as one CD.) It's clever packaging though – you get a different cover, spine text, and disc when you fold out the cover, depending on which way you turn it. There is a cardboard sleeve but no booklet. The track listing is only written on the discs themselves which is a little odd.

I have fallen asleep listening to this stuff quite a few times. It is relaxing.

Today I would like to talk about Moby – Play. The packaging is unremarkable, a jewel case with the track titles on the back. The booklet is interesting – instead of lyrics (there aren't really that many on the album, to be fair) it is a series of short essays on veganism, the prison system, and other political topics.

Fun fact about this album: Every single song was at some point licensed for commercial use as a soundbed for commercials etc. A very Y2K style of music to have in your commercial – that said I actually like it a lot. Moby said concerning the track order "it starts off energetic and then by the end dissolves into an opiated haze", and I do think it's rewarding to listen to all the way through.

The song "South Side" was supposed to have Gwen Stefani singing lead, but apparently there was a problem with mixing & so her vocals were cut. But I guess Moby kept working on it because the single version does have her singing on it. Surprisingly I also have this disc, inherited in a CD wallet that once belonged to my brother's friend, so I don't have the packaging. I like this version better, but I was a little surprised the first time I tried playing it (not really understanding what it was) and it stopped after one song!
