I love cooking so much. I do a lot of it at home. I haven't been able to do as many things lately b/c of having a kid and my wife being pregnant and all. But I thought. .. let's talk about cooking!
I just made something surprisingly good last night for dinner (though it might've given me heartburn): black bean can and microwaved sweet potato. Recipe is:
- microwave sweet potato
- put onion in pot, sizzle
- open black bean can, empty into pot
- cook
- pull sweet potato from microwave, burn hands
- cut up the sweet potato and take the skin off -- the sweet potato and your hands
- put the sweet potato in the beans
- stir
EAT THAT MF
oh i also added like, spices. cumin, garlic powder, chipotle, paprika, whatever you want
cooking!
do you have advice for someone who wants to cook at home more (focusing on nutrition) but struggles to accept the amount of time it takes? like after a long day of work the idea of committing hours to cooking food just pre-exhausts me
that is the tricky part! that's why i haven't cooked as much since having a kid, it's just a lot sometimes.do you have advice for someone who wants to cook at home more (focusing on nutrition) but struggles to accept the amount of time it takes? like after a long day of work the idea of committing hours to cooking food just pre-exhausts me
HOWEVER
there are a few things you can do
- pre-cook stuff. meal prep is actually as great as everyone says. you don't have to go crazy and prep like a month in advance - i am making a pan of ziti tomorrow night for the rest of the week, for example.
- cook stuff that has a lot of down time. see ziti - i actually just have to put on the water to boil, put the ziti in, mix some cheeses together, then do some layers before baking for 30 minutes. actual like, *work* time is maybe 20 minutes tops? kinda like doing laundry
- it takes some time to figure out what you like and what is worth how much hassle for you. like, me, i think pasta and red sauce is the best low-effort meal around, but some folks don't like pasta. that's fine! gotta figure out what you like you know?
- it does NOT have to be fancy, or even like, memorable. i actually really hate cooking culture that's all like "oh i made this perfect wonderful thing in 30 minutes ladedah" - you're going to eat something like 80k meals in your life, they're not all going to be bangers. that's fine. some days you gotta just get the calories into your body.

Suspicious bystander
i've been slowly working on a recipes page on my website, which i'll formally announce once i actually have more than one recipe. should be moving to a bigger space soon though so it'll allow me to cook different stuff! in the meantime https://tilde.town/~nbsp/recipes/bolognese

re: pre-exhaustion, it's tough. I have cooked enough that I know what I can whip together on autopilot while watching youtube that is still tasty/nutritious. my rotation:
- channa masala
- whole wheat pasta with simple pasta sauce (ie a pile of tomatoes you reduce into fried garlic/shallot)
- bean+kale soup
- tofu scramble with whole wheat toast
- bean chili (this takes more prep though)
- meat & two (ie simple to prepare protein like a veggie chicken patty + simple to prepare green like microwave broccoli + simple to prepare starch like a microwave sweet potato like acdw points out. don't forget to burn hands)
i like acdw's points, too.
also i like to remember that even i am pre exhausted by the idea of cooking i'm gonna get leftovers and that shit feels real good the next night!!! it's even easier than ordering out imo, no thought required.
this year I'd like to add another standard to the list but haven't come up with something yet. last year's addition was bean+kale soup.

nbsp, I have similar food issues! my go to for a while was fried rice (cooked in advance and refrigerated until its time to cook) and an egg*, but recently I've been nicer to myself and have been making hummus and cucumber sandwiches
I might try your bolognese recipe!
*scrambled egg cooked in what i call the "un-american" style: if american scrambled eggs are just smashed up omlettes, what are smashed up sunny-side-up eggs?

i, an american, was unaware of this scrambled egg ontological dispute
